Basic Computer Skill Courses:

Basic Computer Skills for Teachers
Participants will learn to understand the functions of the Windows operating system, the Window environment, various software programs, and universal features.

Computer Hardware Basics for Teachers
Participants will learn how to troubleshoot the most common computer problems and to upgrade computer systems.

Basic Internet Skills
Participants will learn the basics of the World Wide Web. They will learn how to navigate the Internet using a browser. Learn how to perform searches, using both simple and advanced methods, and discover the advantages and limitations of search engines.

Authoring Courses:


Introduction to Kidpix
Spend the day exploring Kidpix Deluxe 3, a presentation software program for primary and intermediate students. We will introduce all the tools and inner workings of the program to enable users to create simple classroom presentations. Possible project and integration ideas will be provided.


Inspiration
Inspiration is a visual learning tool for students in the upper grades. This software can be used for organizing thoughts, brainstorming, outlining ideas, and presentations.


Kidspiration
Kidspiration is used as a visual learning tool designed for students in grades K- 4. Students can use Kidspiration for organizing their thoughts and concepts from a particular lesson or project.


MovieMaker
Learn how a digital video camera or a set of digital photographs can create professional-looking videos. iMovie makes it easy for you and your students to turn your digital photos, music and photographs into movies for student projects.


Introduction to PowerPoint:
(Mac/PC) Learn the basics of the most widely used presentation software. Give professional quality presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint. Demonstrate the impact technology can have on education when you create electronic presentations, speaker’s notes, outlines, and handouts. Teach your students how to utilize PowerPoint for a variety of presentations and projects.

Intermediate PowerPoint
(Mac/PC) Now that you know the basics of PowerPoint, learn some advanced techniques. Apply animation and multimedia effects to presentations, such as sound, video and images. You will also learn design principles for creating effective presentations on the Internet.
Microsoft Word for Student and Teacher Projects
Participants will learn the basic operation of Microsoft Word and how to develop projects for classroom management and student projects.

Microsoft Word for Teachers
Microsoft Word is the most popular word-processing program in use today. Participants will explore the features of this versatile program in order to improve teacher productivity. Basic newsletters, formatting graphics and everything in-between will be the focus of this workshop.


Using Microsoft Access in Student Projects
Participants will learn creative ideas on how to incorporate Access databases into various curricular content areas.


Using Excel for Math Applications
(Mac/PC) Learn how Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet activities can be integrated into instruction across the curriculum. Participants will develop lessons and activities that engage students in collecting and organizing data and presenting the results. Excel offers a variety of opportunities for teachers to implement real-world problem solving in their classrooms.

Microsoft Word as Secretary/ Business Tool
Participants will learn the basic operation of Microsoft Word and how to develop form letters, mail merges, newsletters, insertion of Clip Art, and other skills.


Using Publisher to Create Newsletters
(This class is targeted toward secretaries and teachers). Participants will learn to develop newsletters utilizing Microsoft Publisher.

Using Digital Images in Student and Teacher Projects
Participants will learn how to create, manipulate and incorporate digital images into student and teacher projects using PowerPoint or Word. In addition, they will learn how to search for and download appropriate clipart. They will also learn how to: crop, resize, insert borders and lighten and darken images.


E-Sheets
An E- Sheet is a strategy that uses the Internet for teaching and learning. Participants will create and E-Sheet during the workshop that they can use in their classroom. Instructions will also be given on how to reference an Internet website. When creating an E-Sheet, question is developed around a particular website or content area. Students then go out on the Internet to research that particular question or content area. E-Sheets can be developed by teachers for students or by students for fellow students.

Using the Internet for Teaching and Learning
This class is ideal for those with little or no exposure to the Internet. We will examine browser functions, search engines and explore a variety of sites. Participants will become comfortable “surfing” the Internet.

Easy Ways to Use the Internet in Teaching/ Introduction to WebQuest
Using the Internet is not just “surfing the Web” anymore. In this workshop, teachers will access lesson plans, student activities, and websites that meet curriculum and state standards. WebQuest and Marco Polo Program will be presented to enhance a content-rich Internet experience.


The Collaboratory Project
Participants learn to use the online Collaboratory Project developed by the Northwestern University. The Collaboratory Project contains teacher-written units for all content/grade levels. Illinois Benchmarks and student assessment are incorporated into each unit. Teachers find or create their unit lessons using the Northwestern's safe online environment.

One Computer/ One Classroom
Participants will learn strategies, projects and programs to integrate technology into a classroom with only one computer. This workshop will give suggestions and provide a hands-on approach as to what teachers can do in a classroom with only one computer.


SmartBoard
Participants will learn the basics and advanced features of using a SmartBoard. They will learn how to apply the SmartBoard technology into their current teaching practices, as well as integrate a current lesson plans into instructional delivery by using the SmartBoard.


Engaged Learning
Utilizing curriculum developed by the Center for Teaching and Learning, participants will work with others to review the concept of Engaged Learning and to develop units of study. They will utilize technology to generate an authentic problem-based or project-based lesson.


Technology Instruction across Content Areas
Utilizing curriculum developed by the Center for Teaching and Learning, participants become familiar with software and websites that are specific to a particular content area that enhances teaching in the inclusive classroom. They learn to use technology as a tool in Language Arts, Math, and Science classes.


Enhancing Language Arts through Technology

Utilizing curriculum developed by the Center for Teaching and Learning, participants will be introduced to a variety of technology-based resources and tools that can be used to enhance the Language Arts curriculum. Graduate credit possible.


Web-Page Design and Publishing
Utilizing curriculum developed by the Center for Teaching and Learning, participants learn to use Netscape Composer to construct, publish, and maintain a working educational website. Study the basic principles of designing an attractive, effective, and user-friendly site. A general overview of graphic formats, CGI scripting, and other editing tools will be presented. Graduate credit possible.


WebQuest
This is an easy first step to integrating technology into the classroom. A WebQuest is a classroom unit of instruction that allows students to explore essential questions in cooperative learning groups. This two-day workshop will introduce you to some of the technological tools necessary to use WebQuest (Inspiration software, PowerPoint, digital cameras, and LCD Projectors) and lead you through the process of creating your own WebQuest. We will examine web sites that offer pre-made WebQuests, view examples of great lessons using WebQuests and share ideas on how these might work in your own classrooms.
